Smile Less After Tooth Loss? 4 Dental Options for Restoring Your Confidence

Losing a tooth in adulthood is more common than you might think, and there are a number of reasons why it might happen. Whether a tooth was lost to injury, gingivitis, or some other issue, however, you still have to contend with what to do about the lost tooth. These four dental options can help restore both your confidence and your oral health.

Dentures

If you are missing many of your teeth, dentures are a traditional option for restoring your smile. They will help you chew without difficulty and make your mouth look like it once did. There are a few different kinds of dentures, such as partial dentures and full dentures. Your dentist will advise you on what kind you might need. Removable partial dentures do not require that your teeth be filed down and they are often the most economical option for replacing a lost tooth. Immediate dentures are also an option to cover your mouth while it heals following extraction.

Traditional Bridges

A bridge has been the traditional treatment for tooth loss and there are a number of different varieties. Bridges consist of a fake tooth that is anchored to the two surrounding teeth by crowns. They are strong enough to withstand the pressure placed on molars, making them a good replacement option for back teeth. Bridges may need to be removed and cleaned, depending on the type you have had put in. Bridges are cheaper than other options, but the disadvantage lies in potential bone loss and further tooth loss because of the lack of root support.

Maryland Bridges

Maryland bridges are similar to traditional bridges, but they don’t utilize crowns. Instead, they are supported by a metal or porcelain framework that is adhered to the backs of the two adjacent teeth. This alternative is weaker than traditional bridges and usually cannot be used to replace molars. However, they can be a more aesthetically-pleasing option for replacing front teeth.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are currently seen as the most attractive option for restoring lost teeth. They utilize an artificial root to recreate a natural tooth for greatest comfort and appearance, and to secure the jawbone against degradation. Implants cannot always be successfully put in, however, because there must be enough healthy bone to support them.

You don’t have to live ashamed of your smile. You have available options that can help you move on from losing a tooth. Consult your dentist or oral surgeon regarding what might be best for your specific situation. You can soon be happy with your smile again.
